Google Chrome is a browser loaded with a loaded of features. One very useful feature is theContinue where you left offfeature. It is available on all browsers based on the Chromium engine – and this includes Microsoft Edge. This means that if you are using the new Microsoft Edge based on the same Chromium engine or the browser from Opera, you will be able to make use of this feature. What this feature does is that it allows you to restart Browser and Continue where you left off without losing Tabs. It reopens all the tabs that were opened the last time you used the web browser. The causes for this feature not working are vague, but some methods can help you troubleshoot the issue.

Continue where you left off in the Chrome browser

Continue where you left off

  • Open the New Tab page
  • Continue where you left off
  • Open a specific page or set of pages.

Select the desired option and you are all set.

Continue where you left off in the Edge browser

continue where you left off in Edge

Open Edge > Settings > On startup. Here you have 3 options:

  • Open the New Tab page
  • Continue where you left off
  • Open a specific page or set of pages.

Select the desired option and you are all set.

Continue where you left off not working on Chrome or Edge

Sometimes the Continue where you left off option does not work as desired. If you face this issue, on your Windows 11/10 PC, try these suggestions:

  1. Disable and then re-enable the feature.
  2. Allow the web browser to run in the background.
  3. Reinstall the web browser without losing any user profile data.

While we have talked about Chrome here, you have to carry out a similar process for Edge.

1] Disable and re-enable the feature

Open theSettingspage of your web browser.

For the menu ofStartup, select eitherOpen the New Tab pageorOpen a specific page or pages.

Close your web browser.

Reopen the browser and from the same page, selectContinue where you left off.

It should fix the issue.

2] Allow the web browser to run in the background

Due to restrictions posed on the web browser, it might not be able to save the browser state when closed by the user,

You can enable the web browser to be able to run in the background.

This will authorize it to save that state even after it is closed and might get that feature working.

3] Reinstall the web browser without losing any user profile data

There might be some issues with the installation of the web browser. So, you might have to uninstall and then reinstall it.

But that would delete all your browser data. To prevent this, we will have to first backup all the user profile data.

To do that, open the following location in File Explorer:

C:\Users\<USER PROFILE NAME>\AppData\Local\

Look for the directory named after your Chrome or Edge browser and open it.

Inside theUser datafolder, copy all the directories you find and keep them safe in a separate location.

Now you may uninstall the Chrome web browser, get the latest version from their official website, and install it like any other software.

Edge users can opt to Reset or Repair the Edge browser.

Move back all the files to the same location we backed up from theLocalfolder.

This should fix your issue and your data would be fine as it was.

I hope this helps you in fixing the error.
